About the event

Since the British composer Hubert Parry passed away 100 years ago we will honour his memory with this programme. In the first half we will listen to music that influenced Parry, German music with Mendelssohn and Brahms were his greatest sources of inspiration. In the second half we will focus on one of Parry's most famous choral works Songs of Farewell that he wrote at the end of his life during the first world war. With emotional texts we can see Parry's despair to see Germany, that he admired as the pinnacle of culture, now was at war with England. He must have felt an enormous hopelessness to see his former students being shipped off to the continent only to perish in the trenches. However, Parry was hopeful that it would be better in the afterlife.

Music by Hubert Parry, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Johannes Pollak.
